Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has defended record signing Kasper Høgh despite extending his goal drought to 15 matches. The Danish forward failed to score in Thursday’s 3-2 Europa League victory over Besiktas, but his contribution earned praise from his manager.
Høgh was omitted from Denmark’s squad for fixtures against Portugal and Wales after struggling for goals in Scotland. Nevertheless, O’Neill believes the striker offers qualities beyond finishing, particularly his ability to hold up possession and bring teammates into play.
Camilo Duran, his main competitor for the attacking role, has scored seven times in his last eight appearances. O’Neill recognises Duran’s versatility but insists Høgh remains an important option against strong opposition.
Signed from Bodø/Glimt for £11 million plus add-ons, Høgh previously scored against European clubs and began his Celtic career with a hat-trick. Those remain his only goals for the club, although he has supplied four assists during his drought.
