Marseille’s struggles have intensified following a damaging Europa League defeat against Olympiacos at the Stade Vélodrome, undoing hopes of a revival after their recent Ligue 1 victory over Troyes.
The latest setback marks their sixth defeat in eight matches, leaving the French club searching for answers. Coach Bruno Genesio admitted the team must improve faster, expressing frustration with their repeated problems.
Marseille currently sit 13th in Ligue 1 and 32nd in the Europa League standings. According to reports, Genesio has become the first Marseille manager since Mario Zatelli in 1964-65 to lose six of his opening eight games of a season. The club’s previous comparable losing start dates back to 1979-80, when they ultimately suffered relegation.
Financial pressures have also shaped the campaign. Several key players departed during the summer, including Mason Greenwood, sold to Fenerbahce for €39 million, leaving significant gaps in the squad.
