Late in the fourth quarter of the Boston Celtics' Game 4 second-round playoff series defeat, six-time All-Star power forward Jayson Tatum tore his right Achilles tendon. Boston would eventually be put out of their misery in a six-game series loss after limping through two more games. The Celtics may owe their roster $231.5 million even before they kept free agent centres Al Horford and Luke Kornet, which would result in $270.6 million in repeater taxes. The team's on-court players will therefore be more expensive than any previous squad in league history.
It appears doubtful that new owner William Chisholm will be willing to pay everyone, considering the Celtics have almost no chance of winning a championship without Tatum playing at his peak and that the rest of the roster's weaknesses were revealed during that Knicks series.
