Seattle steps up NBA expansion bid with ambitious SuperSonics revival plan

Seattle’s pursuit of an NBA expansion franchise has gained fresh momentum with a second ownership group entering the race. BlackSun Private Equity, which formally applied in August, is developing a proposal to build a new arena and entertainment district on Tulalip Tribes land near Marysville, roughly 35 miles north of the city. Nick Rathod, head of global strategy and communications, confirmed the partnership and emphasized the importance of fan involvement, arguing that their project offers a distinctive and compelling vision.

The bid arrives as the league weighs whether to add one or two teams for the 2028‑29 season, with a decision expected by late 2026. Seattle remains in competition with Las Vegas, widely viewed as the leading candidate. Local dynamics are complicated by the potential sale of the NFL’s Seahawks, which could divert investment. BlackSun values the expansion franchise at $8.1 billion, aligning with league estimates. A successful bid would restore the historic SuperSonics legacy.
