Billy Donovan’s six‑year tenure with the Chicago Bulls has officially come to an end, with the head coach choosing to resign despite holding an option for next season. The organisation announced the decision on Wednesday, stressing that their preference was to continue together but acknowledging Donovan’s wish to step aside following extensive discussions with ownership. In a statement, Donovan said it was in the franchise’s best interest to allow the incoming head of basketball operations to build a staff freely, emphasising his desire not to hinder the transition.
Owner Jerry Reinsdorf praised Donovan’s integrity, noting that the coach consistently prioritised the Bulls’ long‑term future. CEO Michael Reinsdorf echoed that sentiment, highlighting the importance of giving new leadership full autonomy. Donovan departs after a disappointing campaign and a major restructuring of the front office, which included the exits of Arturas Karnisovas and Marc Eversley. He leaves with one playoff appearance and a 226‑256 record.
