BBL privatisation stalls as Queensland declines to back plan

Cricket Australia’s push to privatise the Big Bash League has hit a significant roadblock after Queensland declined to endorse the proposal and New South Wales formally rejected it. CA had asked all six state associations to signal support by mid‑April for a plan to sell 49% stakes in most BBL teams and full ownership of one team each in Victoria and New South Wales. With consensus unattained, CA confirmed it is now assessing alternative pathways, stressing that further analysis with the states is already underway.

The setback is a major blow for chairman Mike Baird and CEO Todd Greenberg, who championed the initiative following last year’s Boston Consulting Group review. CA had hoped to raise up to A$600 million to strengthen the sport’s financial base and enhance Australia’s T20 competitiveness. Despite the potential windfall, influential figures warned that private investment risked eroding control from the game’s traditional custodians, fuelling resistance across the system.
