Aitana Bonmatí believes Spain’s Liga F is no longer keeping pace with Europe’s elite competitions, arguing that the league’s limited competitiveness is driving top players abroad. Speaking to Marca, the three‑time Ballon d’Or winner said many footballers now view foreign leagues — especially England’s WSL — as more attractive destinations. Barcelona’s dominance has masked deeper issues: despite winning seven straight league titles and four of the last six Champions Leagues, the club has seen a steady exodus of key talent since 2024.
Alexia Putellas, Ona Batlle, Mapi León and Salma Paralluelo have all departed, following earlier exits from Mariona Caldentey, Jana Fernández, Fridolina Rolfö and Lucy Bronze. Real Madrid, Barça’s closest domestic rival, has also lost major players, including Caroline Weir, Misa Rodríguez and Teresa Abelleira.
Bonmatí said she hopes Real Madrid strengthen and that Liga F becomes more demanding, insisting higher competition is essential for Spanish clubs to continue improving.
