Emi Martinez underwent surgery after collision in Chelsea’s win

Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez has undergone surgery following a heavy collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League victory, the Argentine confirmed on Sunday.

The incident occurred in the second half when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall delivered a free kick into the penalty area. While Branthwaite recovered after receiving treatment, Martinez required extensive medical attention before being stretchered off and taken to hospital with concussion. Reports in Argentina also indicated a possible jaw injury.

“The operation went well,” Martinez wrote on social media, thanking supporters for their messages and expressing hope of returning within weeks.

His injury prompted Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso to introduce 21-year-old Mike Penders, who made his Premier League debut and helped secure a clean sheet.

With Martinez unavailable during his recovery, Penders could feature in Chelsea’s upcoming fixtures against Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester United. Alonso praised the young goalkeeper’s confidence and insisted the club fully trusts him to deliver when needed.
