UEFA launches “Clear Line” to explain every VAR decision

UEFA has introduced “Clear Line,” a digital platform designed to explain how and why VAR intervenes during matches, addressing long‑standing concerns over transparency and consistency. The tool outlines the main scenarios in which VAR can be used—penalties, red cards, offside actions, attacking phases and cases of mistaken identity—while reaffirming the protocol’s core principle: technology should only assist when a clear and obvious error occurs or a major incident is missed.

The platform also features a section on standardized UEFA procedures, offering insight into how decisions are reviewed in competitions such as the Champions League. Fans will be able to consult a growing library of past incidents to compare controversial episodes with officially catalogued examples.

Developed under the supervision of Roberto Rosetti, Clear Line aims to unify criteria across Europe and improve public understanding of refereeing decisions. Rosetti says the goal is greater coherence, acknowledging that debates will continue but clarity must improve.
