Speaking at a CAF Strategy Conference in Cape Verde, Motsepe confirmed discussions are underway about bringing AFCON back every two years, a proposal that received strong support from attendees.
The CAF president had previously announced that the tournament would be held in 2027 and 2028 before switching to a four-year cycle, with the new schedule designed to accommodate an annual Nations League competition. However, the move proved unpopular, prompting fresh talks over the future of Africa's flagship international tournament, which had traditionally been staged every two years since its inception in 1957.
CAF also confirmed that VAR will be used from the group stage of both the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup this season, expanding its previous use from only the knockout rounds.
