FIFA opens disciplinary cases against Argentina and Gavi after World Cup final

FIFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against the Argentine Football Association and Spain midfielder Gavi following the chaotic aftermath of the 2026 World Cup final. The investigation, based on the ethics inspector’s report, targets Argentina players Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes and Thiago Almada, as well as assistant coach Roberto Fabian Ayala. Gavi is also being examined for unsporting behavior.

The AFA is being reviewed for possible violations of Articles 13, 14, 15 and 17, covering non‑sporting demonstrations, improper conduct, discriminatory acts and failures in venue security. These include discriminatory chants, kick‑off delays, protocol breaches, inappropriate messages and objects thrown during matches. Individually, Molina faces two assault counts and one unsporting charge, Paredes three assault counts, and Almada an unsporting charge. Ayala is under investigation for alleged assault.

All involved parties will be able to present their defense before FIFA delivers a final decision.
