Howe steps down, ending a landmark Newcastle era

Newcastle United have confirmed that Eddie Howe has stepped down as head coach, closing a memorable chapter in the club’s modern history. In a statement, Howe said it was “the right time” to leave after nearly five years of total commitment, during which he ended the Magpies’ 70‑year trophy drought by winning the 2024 League Cup and restored Champions League football to St James’ Park. His coaching staff — Jason Tindall, Graeme Jones, Stephen Purches, Simon Weatherstone and performance chief Dan Hodges — have also departed.

CEO David Hopkinson praised Howe’s leadership and impact, stressing that he leaves with deep gratitude and a lasting place in club history. Newcastle are in advanced talks to appoint Al Ahli manager Matthias Jaissle, who recently won the Asian Champions League and works under the same PIF ownership structure. The Magpies open their Premier League season against Liverpool on August 23.
