Mbeumo punishes Atletico errors as United rally to win

Manchester United overturned an early deficit to beat Atletico Madrid 2‑1, with Bryan Mbeumo scoring twice after the Spanish side collapsed defensively in the second half. Arnau Ortiz, the breakout star of Atletico’s pre‑season, opened the scoring inside five minutes when his curling cross evaded everyone and nestled in the net.

Atletico impressed early, with Jan Oblak producing sharp saves from Luke Shaw and Amad Diallo. But their makeshift squad — missing numerous World Cup players — faltered after the interval. Jorge Castillo conceded a penalty with a rash challenge on Lacey, allowing Mbeumo to equalise. Moments later, Rodrigo Mendoza’s poor clearance and goalkeeper Esquivel’s panicked follow‑up ricocheted off Mbeumo for the winner.

Simeone’s youngsters nearly rescued a draw, with Hjulmand and Mendoza both hitting the woodwork in quick succession. Ortiz remained the standout performer, continuing his rapid rise and pushing for a senior breakthrough after a prolific season in Atletico’s academy.
