Buss family rift over Lakers control deepens

The Buss family’s long‑standing unity over the Los Angeles Lakers has fractured, as five siblings push to sell their remaining 17.8% stake while Jeanie Buss fights to stop the deal. Jim, Johnny, Janie, Joey and Jesse Buss issued a joint statement confirming their intention to proceed with the sale to incoming owners Bob Iger and Josh Kushner, stressing their belief that the move best serves the franchise and its fans. Jeanie, however, is attempting to retain enough shares to remain the team’s governor, a role requiring at least 15% ownership under NBA rules.

Her legal team argues that a 2017 court order prevents any sale without approval from the co‑trustees, including Jeanie herself. The dispute raises questions about governance commitments made during the 2025 sale to Mark Walter and whether Iger and Kushner must honor them. What began as a financial transaction is now a full‑scale battle for control of one of sports’ most iconic franchises.
