Cricket Australia opens Big Bash to private investors

Cricket Australia has formally launched its plan to introduce private investment into the Big Bash League, confirming that the Melbourne Renegades will be the first club placed on the market. CA will invite bids with the intention of installing new ownership ahead of the 2027‑28 season, a move that could later extend to other franchises under a self‑determination model allowing each state to choose its own path.

Chairman Mike Baird described the decision as a deliberate step to secure the long‑term future of Australian cricket, emphasising unity between CA and its state members in strengthening both the BBL and WBBL. He stressed that key operational areas will remain under CA control, including international scheduling, player availability, salary caps, branding and licence reserve prices. Baird added that the process follows months of analysis and collaboration, calling it a defining moment designed to protect the game’s domestic foundations and reinforce Australia’s standing globally.
