Stokes rejects talk of rift with McCullum as England reset after Ashes setback

Ben Stokes has dismissed claims of a breakdown in his relationship with England head coach Brendon McCullum, stressing that their partnership remains intact despite speculation following the 4–1 Ashes defeat in Australia. Stokes and McCullum have worked closely since 2022, but their contrasting approaches during the series fuelled suggestions of tension, with Stokes favouring a more controlled style while McCullum continued to champion his ultra‑aggressive ‘Bazball’ philosophy.

Both publicly supported each other after the tour, and Stokes reiterated that stance in an interview released by the England and Wales Cricket Board, calling reports of misalignment “a massive overstatement”. He added that disagreements are inevitable in shared leadership roles. England return to Test cricket in June against New Zealand before hosting Pakistan, and Stokes acknowledged that his collaboration with McCullum will “look a little bit different” as they attempt to regain momentum ahead of the 2027 Ashes on home soil.
