Coetzee back in South Africa’s ODI plans for Australia series

Gerald Coetzee is set to end his ODI absence after being named in South Africa’s 16‑man squad for the three‑match series against Australia later this month. The fast bowler has not featured in the format since the 2023 World Cup and has struggled with recurring injuries, though he recently bowled in a four‑day game against Bangladesh A. His return comes at a crucial moment, with Kagiso Rabada and Nandre Burger unavailable and Lutho Sipamla withdrawn due to a hamstring problem.

From the group that last played ODIs, South Africa omitted Prenelan Subrayen, Rubin Hermann and Dewald Brevis. Aiden Markram will only be available for the second and third matches, while Tristan Stubbs and veteran David Miller return. The series begins in Durban on September 24, followed by games on September 27 and 30. Head coach Shukri Conrad said Coetzee’s pace will be valuable as South Africa refine combinations ahead of next year’s World Cup.
