Hungarian GP faces exit as Balaton struggles and Hungaroring plans stall

Hungary’s future in MotoGP is suddenly in doubt, with the Balaton Park circuit unlikely to remain on the 2027 calendar and the Hungaroring not yet ready to take its place. After returning to the championship in 2025, Balaton quickly drew criticism from riders for its hazardous layout — especially the first corner — and failed to attract strong crowds or commercial interest. The venue, conceived as part of a broader tourist project, never convinced fans or stakeholders.

MotoGP Sporting Director Carlos Ezpeleta confirmed ongoing talks with Hungarian authorities about shifting the event back to Budapest, where the Hungaroring hosted races in 1990 and 1992. However, the track lacks MotoGP homologation and requires state‑approved upgrades worth around €10 million. With the 2027 calendar nearing completion, Ezpeleta admits the timeline is extremely tight. Unless funding is unlocked soon, Hungary is at serious risk of losing its Grand Prix next season.
