Stoner reveals lifelong battle with spinal compression

Casey Stoner has revealed a striking personal chapter of his career, announcing on Instagram that he recently underwent spinal fusion between L5 and S1 and disc replacement at L4–L5. The two‑time MotoGP world champion explained that the root of his problems dates back to a 2003 crash in the 125 class, when a head‑first impact against hay bales compressed his spine.

Stoner said he managed the condition for more than two decades, but the last two years, especially the past six months, became unbearable, leaving surgery as the only viable solution. Now 40, he described his recovery as uneven but transformative, noting that he finally understands what it means to live without constant pain.

He expressed deep gratitude to his surgeon and medical team for restoring his quality of life. Knowing he achieved two world titles while enduring chronic spinal compression adds even greater weight to his legacy.
