Cal Crutchlow has returned to the MotoGP grid after five seasons away, stepping in for Johann Zarco following the Frenchman’s serious injury in Barcelona. The 40‑year‑old, who retired in 2020 and later worked as Yamaha’s test rider, had not raced for two years before LCR Honda asked him to fill the gap. Speaking to Crash.net, Crutchlow was blunt about his motivations, saying he didn’t long for the sport itself and agreed to return solely because Honda and LCR requested it.
He explained that coming back after such a long break is no easy task, even if he still loves competition. Crutchlow added that he was comfortable watching races from home and does not intend to resume full‑time racing. He also reflected on the pressure of performing again, noting that it comes mostly from within. Initially relaxed, he soon found himself wanting to be competitive, a sign he believes shows he is racing for the right reasons.
