Maresca targets Foden’s return to England’s elite

Enzo Maresca believes he can help Phil Foden rediscover the form that once made him one of England’s standout talents. The midfielder recently broke his prolonged goal drought against Ipswich before scoring three times in City’s 5-1 Champions League victory over AEK Athens.

Foden, who scored 27 goals during his award-winning 2023/24 campaign, has struggled to reproduce those standards over the past two seasons. Maresca has held several conversations with the 26-year-old, stressing his importance to the team and his determination to help him improve.

The Italian has enjoyed an impressive start at City, winning his first seven Premier League matches in charge. Despite uncertainty surrounding the club’s financial case, Maresca insists the squad remains focused.

City face Aston Villa next, with Erling Haaland expected back after a foot injury. Matheus Nunes, Mateo Kovacic and Nico O’Reilly remain doubts ahead of Saturday’s encounter.
