Valencia have appointed former Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre on a contract until the end of the season, replacing interim manager Oscar Sanchez, who had stepped in after Carlos Corberan’s dismissal last week. Aguirre returns to Spanish football following two years with Mexico, where he oversaw the nation’s first World Cup knockout win since 1986 before a narrow 3‑2 loss to England in the last sixteen.

Valencia, the seventh Spanish club of his career, hold an option to extend his deal for another year. The team sit nineteenth in LaLiga with four points after collecting just one point from their opening five matches, prompting Corberan’s departure. Sanchez led two games before the international break, beating Alaves and losing to Real Sociedad. The club also parted ways with CEO of Football Ron Gourlay, reinstating Braulio Vazquez as sporting director. Aguirre and Vazquez now face the task of steering Valencia away from another relegation fight.
