Van Dijk blasts Dutch media: ‘You exaggerated everything during the World Cup’

Virgil van Dijk has sharply criticised Dutch media for what he considers excessive and misleading coverage of the Netherlands’ disappointing 2026 World Cup. The Liverpool defender, speaking alongside new head coach Xavi before the Nations League match against Germany, said journalists exaggerated stories and fuelled unnecessary controversy after the team’s exit to Morocco in the round of sixteen. Van Dijk rejected claims that he pushed for a five‑man defence, calling the rumour “absurd” and insisting the squad simply failed to deliver.

He argued that Dutch outlets portrayed him and former coach Ronald Koeman as responsible for “destroying” Dutch football, a narrative he believes is far removed from international assessments. The Netherlands have struggled in major tournaments since 2014, cycling through familiar coaches and lacking a true talisman. Van Dijk said the media’s role is crucial, urging more balanced reporting as the national team begins a new chapter under Xavi.
