McDonald dreams of Stokes’ Ashes return

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald believes a “fairytale” scenario would see Ben Stokes reverse his retirement and play in the 2027 Ashes in England. Stokes stepped away from Test cricket after the home series against New Zealand, England’s first home defeat under the Stokes‑McCullum leadership. Speaking to SEN radio, McDonald said Stokes returning for one last Ashes would generate huge anticipation and be the ideal promotional angle for the series.

Stokes retired amid controversy, having been suspended for the second Test after a late‑night bar incident in which a team security staffer was hurt. Although not directly involved, Stokes and Gus Atkinson broke curfew and were sidelined. Stokes apologised before the final Test, during which he announced his decision. McCullum tried to change his mind but was later removed as coach. Stokes has since played List A cricket for Durham, scoring a rapid century. McDonald feels Stokes still has plenty to offer if persuaded back.
