Tom Izzo turns down Suns approach

Tom Izzo has confirmed he declined an offer to become head coach of the Phoenix Suns, revealing on the Dan Patrick Show that the proposal came directly from owner Mat Ishbia, a former player of his at Michigan State. Izzo admitted he has received multiple NBA overtures over the years and seriously considered this one, but ultimately chose to remain in the college game.

At 71, he remains a defining figure in NCAA basketball, having led the Spartans since 1995 with 764 wins, a national title in 2000 and a résumé that includes Big Ten dominance and a Hall of Fame induction. Phoenix, coming off a 42–34 season and parting ways with Mike Budenholzer after just one year, eventually hired Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott on a four‑year deal. Izzo’s decision underscores his commitment to stability at Michigan State as the Suns continue navigating rapid organizational change.
