Giannis reveals 2020 crisis: ‘Now I feel unbreakable’

Giannis Antetokounmpo has revealed that in 2020 he seriously considered walking away from basketball, describing it as one of the most difficult periods of his life. Speaking at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation’s “SNF Nostos 2026” festival, the Milwaukee star explained that mental‑health struggles, family pressure and overwhelming expectations pushed him to the brink. He recalled the weight he carried after his father’s death, the arrival of his first child and the responsibility of supporting his family while being expected to perform as one of the world’s elite athletes.

Antetokounmpo admitted he loved the sport but disliked the constant spotlight, noting that his introverted nature clashed with global fame. The turning point came when he realised that no external pressure could take away the joy he found in the game. That moment, he said, reshaped him. Giannis now considers himself stronger, calling the experience transformative for him as a father, husband and person.
