Kawhi trade stalls as NBA probe reaches final stage

The NBA’s inquiry into Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers is reportedly in its final phase, yet the star forward’s potential return to Toronto is still on hold. Speaking on The Rich Eisen Show, Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic said the independent law firm assigned to the case has finished its work, leaving league officials to determine whether Leonard, the Clippers or owner Steve Ballmer should face sanctions. The probe centers on allegations that Leonard’s sponsorship deal with Aspiration, a failed company tied financially to Ballmer, may have circumvented salary‑cap rules.

The Clippers deny wrongdoing, claiming they were victims of Aspiration’s fraud. Any punishment would require arbitration and could trigger NBPA involvement, delaying the trade involving Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick and future picks. Vorkunov still expects the deal to proceed unless Leonard’s contract is voided. For now, all players remain with their teams as the league prepares its ruling.
