The International Cricket Council (ICC) has concluded the announcement of the winners of the ICC Awards 2023. The Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year went to Australia's captain Pat Cummins, and Chamari Athapaththu of Sri Lanka won her first-ever ICC Women's ODI Cricketer of the Year title.
The first Sri Lankan female cricket player to receive an ICC Award is Athapaththu. In addition to winning the individual award, she had a historic year as the captain of the ICC Women's ODI and T20I Teams of the Year, which were revealed earlier this week. In eight games in 2023, the all-rounder amassed 415 runs with a strike-rate of 125.37 and an average of 69.16. Her undefeated innings of 108 and 140 in the June and July ICC Women's Championship series against New Zealand helped Sri Lanka win 2-1 in Galle, among many other highlights of the year.
