Stokes tips Brook as England’s next Test leader

Ben Stokes has endorsed Harry Brook as England’s future Test captain following his own retirement from international cricket. Brook already leads England in ODIs and T20Is and has served as Stokes’ deputy in the Test setup, yet England chose former skipper Joe Root to stand in during the recent Oval Test against New Zealand. Stokes stressed he had no role in that decision, noting the disciplinary absence that kept him and Gus Atkinson out of the match.

Stokes argued that Brook’s appointment should follow the usual progression for a vice‑captain, pointing to his own experience under Root. He praised Brook’s growing seniority and exceptional batting talent, suggesting added responsibility could elevate his game further. Stokes said leadership roles are given only to players deemed capable of stepping up when required, adding that Brook fits that profile completely. Offering full backing, Stokes made clear Brook is his choice to take over England’s Test captaincy.
