Captains slam ICC’s new ODI World Cup format

The ICC’s revamped 2027 ODI World Cup format has drawn sharp criticism from several international captains, who argue the new structure limits meaningful opportunities for Associate nations. Through statements released by the World Cricketers’ Association, Netherlands captain Scott Edwards called the changes “incredibly disappointing”, stressing that years of planning and investment are devalued when qualification pathways shift. Namibia’s Gerhard Erasmus said the World Cup represents a “long form” for many Associates and should offer a genuine chance to compete on cricket’s biggest stage.

Ireland captain Paul Stirling highlighted how smaller nations consistently add value at global events, pointing to football’s World Cup as proof that inclusive formats enrich major tournaments. Scotland’s Richie Berrington urged administrators to consult players more seriously on decisions affecting careers and competitive balance. USA’s Harmeet Singh and New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell echoed calls for fair, consistent access, noting that World Cup opportunities drive development, inspire fans and shape the sport’s global future.
