Defending champions, Atletico Madrid forced a two goal draw with Villarreal

Atletico Madrid missed the chance to top the La Liga table after Villarreal held them back with a 2-2 draw on Sunday. The defending champions had to fight to force a draw and later were thankful for their own goal in the injury time that ensured a point for them. In the fifth minute of added time, while Atleti had all but given up the hope to force a draw, Villarreal’s Aissa Mandi gave away two points for Villareal in the form of a late own goal.

A painful back pass from Mandi left the keeper stranded as he watched the ball go into the net and give Atletico a point. Earlier Manu Triguera and then Arnaut Danjuma had put the visitors ahead while the host played catchup and cut the lead with Luis Suarez’s goal. The injury-time blunder helped Atletico Madrid level upon seven points with Real Madrid, Sevilla, Barcelona, Mallorca, and Valencia at the top of the table.
