Iceland is a small country with only 323,002 inhabitants, today they wowed the world by making a historic achievement and qualifying to the European Championship's round of 16 for the first time ever. They did this in style after not losing a single match on the group stage and getting their ticket with a last minute winning goal that gives them the second spot above Portugal. They got past the Austria National team in a thrilling game from start to finish.
Their dream started taking form in the 18th minute as Arnason flicked on a free-kick at the near post and Bodvarsson steered it home. This momentary lead would last through the whole first half, it was close to getting leveled on the 37th minute after a penalty kick was called against Iceland as Alaba fell down inside the box. But Austria's player Dragovic dragged his effort into the post and missed the penalty just eight minutes from half-time.
But the Austrian national team wasn't going to give up just yet, fifteen minutes into the second half it was substitute Schopf who darted into the box, skipped a challenge and fired home low past goalkeeper Halldorsson. This was the equalizer for Austria but they needed a victory, whereas Iceland had enough with this draw to get past to the next round in third place of the group. But this story was meant to end in a dramatic exciting manner. Portugal's game was already finished, but Iceland still had a chance to strip them from the second spot of the group.
On the 94th minute as Austria poured forwards, Bjarnason raced clear on the break and set up Traustason to slide the ball home at the far post. It was a dream come true for that small Nordic country. But this may have been more fortunate for Portugal because they avoided playing against England who will be Iceland's rival next Monday evening. Regardless of this, Hungary got the first spot, Iceland that historic second and Portugal got a decent third to qualify.
