UEFA has appointed English referee Michael Oliver to oversee tonight’s Champions League quarter‑final first leg between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich at the Santiago Bernabéu. The 41‑year‑old, an international official since 2012, will be supported by assistants Stuart Burt and James Minwaring, with Jarred Gillet and Italy’s Marco Di Bello handling VAR duties. Andrew Madley serves as fourth official.
This will be Oliver’s fifth time refereeing Real Madrid, with previous assignments including their dramatic 2018 defeat to Juventus, the 2022 UEFA Super Cup win over Eintracht Frankfurt, a victory against Braga and last November’s seven‑goal thriller versus Olympiacos. Bayern have fared even better under his watch, winning six of seven matches he has officiated, the only blemish being a draw with Salzburg in 2022.
Oliver’s latest outing came in Manchester City’s 4‑0 FA Cup win over Liverpool, while Germany’s Daniel Siebert will referee today’s other quarter‑final.
