Less than 24 hours after the Phoenix Suns, who have the highest payroll in the NBA, concluded with a 36-46 record and dismissed head coach Mike Budenholzer on Monday. In Budenholzer's lone season as head coach, the Suns finished the season three games off of a berth in the play-in tournament, in 11th place in the Western Conference. He was brought in to take the position of Frank Vogel, who was fired after just one season the previous year.
Owner Mat Ishbia went all out for his team, spending $150 million this season on Bradley Beal, Devin Booker, and Kevin Durant after Phoenix made the playoffs the previous four seasons. Phoenix will now be searching for its sixth head coach since 2015–16 when star guard Booker made his NBA debut, and its fourth in four seasons.
