Rasooli to lead Afghanistan’s youth‑driven Asian Games squad

Afghanistan have appointed Darwish Rasooli captain of a revamped 15‑member squad for the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi‑Nagoya, signalling a clear investment in youth. Rasooli, who previously led the side in a one‑off T20I against Qatar, forms the experienced core alongside Karim Janat and Najibullah Zadran, while spinner Nangeyalia Kharote is the only other player with more than ten caps. Kharote is expected to spearhead the spin attack with legspinner Arab Gul Momand.

The pace group features Farmanullah, Abdollah Ahmadzai and Faridoon Dawoodzai, supported by seam‑bowling allrounders Janat and Ismat Alam. Several newcomers have been rewarded for standout Shpageeza Cricket League campaigns, including top run‑scorer Mohammad Akram and strike bowler Khalid Taniwal. Ismat, the tournament’s Player of the Season, excelled with 294 runs at a 168 strike rate and nine wickets.

Faisal Shinozada and Hassan Eisakhil also earn selection. The cricket event runs from September 24 to October 3.
