CAF President Patrice Motsepe dropped a bombshell at an executive meeting in Rabat, announcing that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will transition to a quadrennial format following the 2028 edition. Today, however, focus remains on the 35th tournament kicking off in Morocco against Comoros.
While the scheduled 2027 finals in East Africa and a subsequent 2028 event will proceed, the competition will thereafter mimic the European Championship's four-year cycle. To counterbalance the potential loss of AFCON’s crucial revenue, which historically funds the governing body, Motsepe revealed plans for an annual African Nations League starting in 2029. This strategic overhaul aims to secure sustainable financial independence and better synchronize with the global FIFA calendar.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino had long suggested this change to resolve persistent friction with European clubs over mid-season player releases. Ultimately, this significant restructuring solves scheduling conflicts, like those caused by recent Club World Cup expansion.
