Atletico Madrid and Villarreal have reached an agreement for the transfer of midfielder Alex Baena, marking Atletico’s third major signing of the summer after Matteo Ruggeri and Johnny Cardoso. While the deal is yet to be made official, Baena’s transfer is expected to cost €45m plus €5m in add-ons, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Cardoso’s fee exceeds €30m, and Ruggeri’s could rise to €20m, meaning Atletico’s fixed summer spending now totals at least €93m and could surpass €100m with variables. Villarreal have all but confirmed Baena’s departure, expressing confidence in Diego Simeone’s ability to maximize his potential. The clubs are finalizing minor details, including payment structure, but the agreement is in place with the player also on board. This marks the second consecutive summer of heavy investment for Atletico Madrid as they look to rebuild their midfield.
