Due to a dispute about Marc-Andre Ter Stegen's health following back surgery at the end of July, Barcelona began disciplinary procedures against him on Tuesday and deprived him of the club leadership on Thursday. The club attempted to have La Liga classify the 33-year-old as having a long-term ailment so that Barcelona could remove a portion of his salary from their official wage bill since he had failed to comply and divulge his medical information. But late at night, Barcelona released a statement claiming that the player had signed the necessary paperwork. As the new Liga season approaches, Barcelona is once again struggling to comply with Spanish financial fair play rules.
Ter Stegen's place in the squad is threatened by 24-year-old Joan Garcia and 35-year-old Polish veteran Wojciech Szczesny, who was rewarded with a contract extension for stepping in during the Liga title-winning campaign last season.
