At home against Genoa, Empoli suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss and wasted a vital penalty opportunity. Caleb Ekuban and Milan Badelj's goals gave the visitors the victory, forcing Empoli to consider their wasted opportunities.
Empoli had a fright early in the game as Emmanuel Gyasi came close to scoring in the opening minute but was called offside. From a promising position, Liam Henderson had an opportunity to put Empoli ahead but failed. Goalie Stefano Turati made a good stop after being put to the test by Tino Anjorin of Genoa at the opposite end. But just after halftime, Genoa took the lead. Later, Esposito made amends by scoring with a looping header after Anjorin had assisted. But in the end, Genoa increased their advantage; Fabio Miretti helped Caleb Ekuban with a straightforward tap-in. Esposito's goal gave Empoli hope, but despite many tries, they were unable to level.
