It was an eventful afternoon at Parc Olympique Lyonnais at Lyon, the rain was starting to kick in and both Northern Ireland and Ukraine were after a victory after both lost their games against Germany and Poland. The first half didn't have a lot of interesting moments, but the second half was way more exciting, both fan groups were cheering up their sides despite the awful weather. The Northern Ireland side was the team that took the advantage after the break.
It was on the 49th minute when they managed to get ahead in the score sheet, as a lovely cross by Norwood was met by a booming McAuley header and Northern Ireland got the lead in Lyon. All eight of McAuley's goals for his country have come in competitive fixtures, turning him into a very reliable player for Northern Ireland. The Ukraine was invested on getting that equalizer, they made the impossible but the Irish goalkeeper was on point.
There was a moment when the match had to be stopped around the 60th minute due to adverse weather conditions, big hailstones were falling from the sky and the players' integrity was endangered. But after about five minutes they ceased falling and the match was underway once again. This wasn't your typical French summer, it sure was an interesting one with this kind of pouring rain. But that wasn't going to stop the fans from enjoying the last minutes of an exciting match at Lyon.
The referee added six minutes of over time, anything could happen mainly because the Irish were completely exhausted and Ukraine was determined to get that late equalizer. But Northern Ireland took energy from their fighting spirit and finished off Ukraine with a McGinn goal when the goalkeeper gave him a rebound after a long distance effort he deflected. However, at the end the Irish earned a historic result from this group thanks to McAuley's resolve in competitive matches.
