OFFICIAL: Former United's Raphael Varane retires at the age of 31

After joining Como last summer, Raphael Varane has taken the decision to terminate his contract with the club and bid farewell to professional football. The verdict was made after the French international sustained a serious injury last night in the Serie A match against Atalanta, which Como won 3-2. The player was forced off the pitch at the 23' for what it is said to be a knee injury.

Reports from 'Le Parisien' suggest the injury would have kept the defender out for several months, prompting him to consider an early retirement. The game was, in fact, Varane's debut for the newly-promoted Italian side led by Cesc Fabregas, however, it also looks like it will be his last. The former Real Madrid and Manchester United defender is thus set to hang up his boots at the age of 31.

Raphael Varane has announced his decision via a post on Instagram.
