The International Football Association Board has officially sanctioned strict protocols to combat time-wasting, significantly expanding VAR’s scope for the upcoming World Cup despite fears regarding game delays. Video review will now rectify wrongly awarded corners, provided the check happens immediately. To further discourage stalling, countdown timers are being introduced for goal-kicks, throw-ins, and substitutions. Exceeding these limits forces a possession turnover, potentially turning goal-kicks into corners.
Strict substitution rules state that players must exit within ten seconds; non-compliance delays their replacement’s entry by at least one minute of active play. Similarly, players receiving injury treatment must stay off-field for sixty seconds before returning.
Although these new laws officially commence July 1, they will be fast-tracked for the World Cup starting June 11. Finally, IFAB plans future discussions regarding players leaving the pitch to protest decisions and those covering their mouths during confrontations, thereby ensuring the sport's integrity remains fully protected.
