Mario Götze, scorer of Germany’s iconic winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final, has signed a two‑year contract extension with Eintracht Frankfurt, keeping him at the club until 2028. The 33‑year‑old midfielder, who joined Frankfurt in 2022 after spells with Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and PSV Eindhoven, said the joy he still finds in football convinced him to continue.
Götze famously came off the bench in the 2014 final, chesting down an André Schürrle cross before firing home in extra time to secure Germany’s fourth world title. His career, once marked by Golden Boy acclaim, was later disrupted by injuries, illness and the pressure of early expectations.
Since returning to the Bundesliga, he has rebuilt consistency, making 148 appearances and scoring 12 goals for Frankfurt. Götze netted 17 times in 66 caps for Germany, with his last international appearance coming in 2023, and remains a cherished figure in German football.
