Jayasuriya resigns as Sri Lanka head coach

Following a slim defeat to Pakistan that ended their T20 World Cup run, Jayasuriya revealed his decision at a media briefing, surprising the board. Despite his contract running through June 2026, he is departing, though he may oversee the Afghanistan series starting March 13.

Appointed after the 2024 T20 World Cup, his leadership initially yielded success, including a landmark ODI series victory against India and significant Test wins over England and New Zealand. However, his final year proved disastrous. Sri Lanka suffered a humiliating exit from the home T20 World Cup with four consecutive losses. Additionally, poor showings in the 2025 Asia Cup, a tri-series in Pakistan, and a 3-0 drubbing by England marred his record. Consequently, the former chief selector ends a stint defined by early promise but ultimate failure, stepping away prematurely.
