Following losses to Swansea in the Carabao Cup and Arsenal the previous weekend, this game presented an opportunity for a first win, however, Jaidon Anthony negated Neco Williams' opening goal in the second minute. Because of the persistent rain, circumstances were difficult for both teams, and Burnley was appreciative of goalie Martin Dubravka's series of excellent saves.
The only alteration from Burnley's heartbreaking loss to Liverpool last weekend was the full debut of Benfica loanee Florentino, who replaced the suspended Lesley Ugochukwu. Postecoglou also gave three summer recruits—Douglas Luiz, Dilane Bakwa, and Oleksandr Zinchenko—their first Premier League starts. Postecoglou would have been extremely frustrated by that, but some of Forest's fast passing on the area's edge was impressive and led to two good chances: Chris Wood scuffed his shot directly at the Burnley keeper, and Dubravka ducked to his right to block Bakwa's curling attempt.
