Ashie Quaye on the mark as Olympics open season with win against Bechem

Samuel Abbey Ashie Quaye’s second-half strike saw Accra Great Olympics secure a 1-0 win over Bechem United in the opening game of the BetPawa Premier League at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday.

Abbey Quaye tapped-in from a close range late in the game as the Dade Boys made a triumph start to the season.

And while the visitors returned brighter after the break in a second half that saw a couple of chances for either side, the wind was firmly taken out of their sails when a second-half substitute Emmanuel Akesseh's immediate impact was felt with a cross that deleted off the foot of Emmanuel Mensah to nicely gift Abbey the first goal of the campaign.

Bechem came to Accra hoping to avoid defeat against Olympics for the second successive season after playing a goalless draw game in their last encounter.

The opening game of the season began with the visitors on the front foot as they controlled the game while the host try to hit them on the counter. It was long before the first shot on target was registered as Avornyo’s low strike was firmly handled by the goalkeeper in post for Olympics.

Avornyo again was a messing in the first half as he was brought down in the penalty box but the referee waved for play to continue to the dismay of the visitor's technical bench.

The second half started with a little bit of urgency from the host as they started putting some passes together as they try to get hold of the game. Coach Preko made an early substitution by taking off Daniel Adjetey for Samuel Abbey Quaye the eventual match winner.

Despite the early dominance in the second half from the host, Bechem was not troubled as Olympics found it difficult breaking down their defence - until the introduction of Emmanuel Akesseh whose brilliance unlocked that well-organized Bechem’s defence.

Great Olympics found joy finally after 82 minutes of action as they gave their supporters something to cheer. It was not so great performance from the Accra-based side but it’s the result that matters after the final whistle.

Not many gave Olympics a chance against this Bechem side after losing a couple of first-team players and also their coach but it was a good start for the new look Olympics side.
