Odsonne Edouard gave Palace the lead two minutes into the second half until Villa's substitute Jhon Duran tied the score in the 87th minute. Villa, though, finished the turnaround during the extra time. Ollie Watkins was hauled down by Chris Richards and awarded a penalties, which Luiz converted after a protracted video assistant referee review.
Bailey then scored from close range as Palace pushed players forward in an effort to score their own equaliser. Due to sickness, Paddy McCarthy, Roy Hodgson's assistant, managed the team in the Palace dugout. After Watkins missed two significant opportunities either side of halftime, it seemed as though Villa would pay for their wastefulness. Sam Johnstone made a save in the first half before Watkins was stopped by the post in the second. Despite having the most of the ball for the first 45 minutes, Watkins' opportunity apart, Villa was unable to penetrate an efficient Palace defence.
