Cologne stuns Union Berlin to edge to safety

Damion Downs, saved Cologne’s dreams of a fantastic comeback when he came off the bench to score the game's winning goal in the 92nd minute. Within 19 minutes, Union had jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Kevin Volland's penalty and Robin Knoche's thunderous header, which gave the Berliners total command. Cologne had optimism thanks to a Florian Kainz penalty just before halftime, but Union maintained their lead until the 87th minute when Cologne pulled off an incredible comeback. Union was still reeling when 19-year-old substitute Downs turned Linton Maina's cross into a goal to raise the roof and give his team a crucial victory. Steffen Tigges closed the gap at 2-2 with a close-range goal.

The best Cologne can hope for on the last day is to secure a relegation play-off spot at Union's cost. Union, who began the season in the Champions League but have already dropped two points from their previous seven games, will take on Freiburg in the season finale. Freiburg, who drew 1-1 with Heidenheim on Saturday, will be playing for the final European slot.
