De Jong’s Wage Deferral Paves Way for Barcelona to Sign Nico Williams

Frenkie de Jong’s gesture of goodwill could be pivotal in helping Barcelona secure the signing of Nico Williams this summer. According to Diario Sport, De Jong is currently negotiating a contract extension that would keep him at the club until 2029. During talks, Barcelona asked if he would again defer part of his salary—something he had previously done during the Covid-19 crisis. While his representatives initially resisted, De Jong has now personally stepped in to move things forward. A new agreement is reportedly close, with the Dutch midfielder agreeing to defer his wages for next season.

This financial adjustment would create the salary margin Barcelona needs to finalize a deal for Athletic Club winger Nico Williams. As Sport reports, restructuring De Jong’s contract could be the key step in making the high-profile summer signing possible and improving the squad under Hansi Flick.
