Dier injury adds to Bayern's defensive worries

Bayern Munich suffered another injury blow when Eric Dier was forced off in the second half of their 4-0 win over Mainz in the DFB-Pokal due to a knee problem.

It wasn't clear at the end of the game how serious Dier's injury is, but it adds to Bayern's concerns at the back, where he was filling in for Dayot Upamecano.

Upamecano is now in a battle with time to be fit for Bayern's Bundesliga clash with Union Berlin on Saturday, with board member for sport Max Eberl optimistic that the Frenchman will be able to play. "I assume so. That's why we didn't play him today. Now we have to see from day to day," Eberl said after the win over Mainz.

Bayern already have a number of injuries at the back, with Sacha Boey, Hiroki Ito and Josip Stanisic all out for some time.
